TL;DR: How esports betting odds work
- Three formats matter: decimal (Europe, 2.50), fractional (UK, 3/2) and American (US, +150). They’re three ways of saying the same thing, and you’ll meet all three depending on which book you sign up with.
- Decimal odds × stake = total return. Subtract the stake for profit. The cleanest format to do quick maths with.
- Implied probability is what odds tell you. 2.00 = 50%, 1.50 = 67%, 3.00 = 33%. If your read on the match disagrees, you’ve got a value bet.
- Bookmakers bake in a margin (the “vig”). Use our no-vig calculator to see the fair price.
- Line shop. Betway, GG.Bet and a third book often disagree by 5-10 cents on the same CS2 map handicap. That’s your edge.
Odds are the bookmaker’s guess at what’s going to happen, dressed up as a number. Learn to read them and you stop betting blind. This guide takes you through all three formats, the maths that actually matters, and the one habit (line shopping) that separates punters who break even from punters who tilt.
Want to start with a book that posts sharp esports lines? Betway and GG.Bet are our two go-tos. You’ll find decimal, fractional or American formats inside the account settings, so it doesn’t matter what you’re used to.

The Three Odds Formats Explained
Every esports book uses one of three formats. The number tells you the same story; the maths just looks different. Knowing all three means you’re never thrown by which book you’re on.
Decimal odds (the European standard)
A single number, usually between 1.01 and 100.00. Multiply by your stake to see your total return.
Example. NAVI to beat FaZe in a BLAST Premier semi @ 1.75. Stake €20. Return: €20 × 1.75 = €35. Profit: €15.
Decimal is the easiest to do quick maths with, which is why Betway, GG.Bet and most European books default to it. It’s our recommended setting.
Fractional odds (the UK standard)
Two numbers separated by a slash, 3/2, 7/4, 11/10. The left number is your profit per stake of the right number.
Example. G2 Esports at 3/2 to win a Mid-Season Invitational quarter. Stake £20. Profit: £20 × (3 ÷ 2) = £30. Total return: £50.
3/2 in fractional = 2.50 in decimal. Add 1 to the decimal of the fraction (1.50 + 1.00) and you’ve got the decimal equivalent.
American odds (the plus/minus format)
A positive or negative number, usually between -1000 and +1000. Different rules for each.
- Positive (e.g. +150): the underdog. Profit on a $100 stake = the number itself. +150 means €100 stake returns €150 profit.
- Negative (e.g. -200): the favourite. Stake needed to win $100 profit = the absolute number. -200 means you stake €200 to win €100.
Example. Astralis -200 vs FaZe +150 on map 1 of an IEM Katowice quarter. Astralis is the favourite, FaZe the dog. A €200 Astralis bet returns €100 profit. A €100 FaZe bet returns €150 profit.
Converting Between the Three Formats
Quick conversion table for the most common esports prices you’ll see. Bookmark this or set your book to decimal and don’t worry about it.
| Decimal | Fractional | American | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | 1/2 | -200 | 66.7% |
| 1.75 | 3/4 | -133 | 57.1% |
| 2.00 | 1/1 (evens) | +100 | 50.0% |
| 2.50 | 3/2 | +150 | 40.0% |
| 3.00 | 2/1 | +200 | 33.3% |
| 4.00 | 3/1 | +300 | 25.0% |
Implied Probability, What the Odds Really Mean
Implied probability is the bookmaker’s view of how likely the outcome is, expressed as a percentage. From decimal odds the formula is:
Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds × 100
So Spirit @ 1.75 to win a Dota 2 ESL One series has an implied probability of 1 ÷ 1.75 = 57.1%. The book is saying Spirit wins this series 57 times out of 100.
This is the whole game. If you think Spirit’s chances are actually 65% (better roster cohesion against this opponent, recent LAN form, favourable map pool), then 1.75 is a value bet. If you reckon they’re 50%, the book has it about right. You’re not always going to be right, but you’ll be right often enough to clear the vig.
Two free tools that automate the maths:
- Our esports betting odds calculator flips between formats and shows implied probability instantly.
- For accumulators, our parlay calculator works out total return on legs of any odds format.
The Bookmaker’s Margin (The Vig)
Add up the implied probabilities of all possible outcomes on a market and the total will be over 100%. That overround is the bookmaker’s margin, the “vig” or “juice”.
Worked example. A BLAST Premier match-winner market: Heroic 1.85, MOUZ 2.00. Implied: 54.1% + 50.0% = 104.1%. The bookmaker has built in a 4.1% margin. The true probabilities (de-vigged) would be roughly 52% Heroic, 48% MOUZ.
Sharp esports books like Pinnacle run 2-3% margins. Soft books like high-street UK brands sometimes run 7-10%. Run any line through our no-vig calculator before staking. It’s the single fastest way to spot a soft price.
Line Shopping, The Habit That Pays
Same match, two different sites, two different prices. Heroic to beat NAVI in an ESL Pro League BO3 might be 1.90 at Betway and 1.95 at GG.Bet. Five-cent gap. Over 500 bets a year, that gap compounds into 3-5% extra return.
The discipline:
- Keep two or three accounts open. Betway and GG.Bet is a strong starter pair.
- Before placing any stake, check the same price on both books. Click the better one.
- On props (pistol round winner, first blood, total maps), the gaps are wider than on match-winner. That’s where line shopping pays the most.
Game-specific odds breakdowns help here too: our LoL betting odds guide and Overwatch betting odds guide show what reasonable lines look like for each title. The Counter-Strike 2 hub is where most of our worked examples come from. The CS2 market depth is what makes it the cleanest game to learn pricing on.
Esports Markets Where Odds Behave Differently
Match-winner is the cleanest market and the most efficiently priced. The further out you go, the more inefficient lines get.
- Map handicap (-1.5 / +1.5): Wide differences book-to-book on Tier 2 CS2 lines. The sharpest market for casual edge-hunters.
- Total maps / total rounds: Often slow to update after roster moves or map veto changes. Worth checking the morning of.
- Pistol round winner: A coin-flip on paper, but specific T-side pistols on Anubis and Inferno run hot at the moment. Lines lag.
- Outright tournament winner: Long shots have the worst implied-probability vig. A 50.00 outright might really be 60.00 fair value.
For the regulatory side, our esports betting legality guide covers what’s allowed where. Country pillars for the UK and Canada dig into which operators serve which markets at what odds.
FAQ, Esports Betting Odds
What does +150 mean in esports betting?
+150 is the American odds format and marks the underdog. A €100 stake returns €150 in profit if the bet wins. The same price in decimal is 2.50 and in fractional is 3/2.
What does -200 mean?
-200 is American odds for a favourite. You need to stake €200 to win €100 in profit. In decimal that’s 1.50, in fractional 1/2. The implied probability is 66.7%.
How do I convert decimal odds to implied probability?
Divide 1 by the decimal odds and multiply by 100. So 2.50 = 1 ÷ 2.50 = 0.40 = 40%. Our esports betting odds calculator does this automatically.
What is the vig in esports betting?
The vig (or overround) is the bookmaker’s built-in margin. Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes on a market and the total above 100% is the vig. Sharper books charge 2-3%, softer books 7-10%.
Which odds format is best to use?
Decimal is the cleanest for quick maths because the number directly tells you total return per unit staked. Most esports books default to decimal and let you switch to fractional or American inside account settings.
How do I find value bets in esports?
Compare the bookmaker’s implied probability to your own estimate. If you think the true chance of a CS2 team winning is 60% and the odds imply 50%, the price is good value. The discipline is being honest about your estimate, not the maths.
Why are odds different at different bookmakers?
Each book sets its own lines based on its model, its incoming bet flow and the margin it wants to charge. Soft books move slower on niche esports markets like CS2 pistol rounds or LoL first-blood props, which is where line shopping pays off. That’s the inefficiency you’re hunting.
