The Grand Final that was decided in the draft, not the plays

TI 2024 Grand Final. Team Falcons versus Team Liquid. Game 5. I was watching in bed at three in the morning trying to talk myself out of a live bet.

The Liquid draft had already given the game away. Falcons’ captain grabbed Puck at position four last-pick. Liquid had picked Underlord second phase. Puck into Underlord is a matchup Dota veterans have known for six years: the Underlord aura shreds Puck’s mana pool before Puck can play a single teamfight cleanly. Liquid still needed a way to close before Falcons scaled. They took a 33-Kez late core, a hero who wants a 40-minute pace game against a Puck-heavy pick that wants to fight at 25.

The draft told the story before the horn. Falcons at 1.85 to close the series should not have been available at that price. The market caught up inside eight minutes.

Nobody I follow on Twitter or on esports affiliate sites was talking about the draft ten minutes before the horn. Everyone was talking about Kez pick rates and Liquid’s LAN record. The book was pricing the fight, not the draft that had already decided the fight.

This page is built on that idea. Dota 2 is a draft-first game. Draft-first betting is the edge nobody else on the SERP is teaching. Every operator recommendation, every specialist read, every market I list here loops back to that one thesis: read the draft, then bet the match. Not the other way round.

How to actually bet Dota 2 in 2026

Three rules, learned the slow way.

One. I watch the draft before I place a match bet. Every Bo3 pro Dota match is essentially two or three drafts stacked. I open the pick-and-ban stream on YouTube, watch the first phase, and note the counter-picks. If the draft looks lopsided, I check the market before laning begins. Books usually take 3 to 6 minutes after the draft closes to move the line. That is my window.

Two. Books don’t price Roshan. Aegis of the Immortal at minute 12 versus minute 18 is a huge swing in expected map economy. When a team on 1.40 has just given up first Roshan and I can find a live line at 2.10, I move. Roshan control feeds the tower-gold cascade and the tower cascade feeds the barracks push. It’s not opinion. It is documented across every ESL and BLAST replay for the last three seasons.

Three. On the Big Four, GG.BET is the deepest Dota book, Thunderpick has the widest prop menu, Betway is my fallback for reliable settlements on Majors, and TonyBet is my Canadian regulated home. None of the four is my only book. I use them together depending on what markets each one offers on a given match.

The comparison below tracks which book covers which markets on the events that actually matter this year.

What a Dota 2 betting site actually is

A Dota 2 betting site is a licensed bookmaker or specialised esports platform that prices markets on competitive Dota 2 matches. In 2026 that covers the DPC replacement circuit run by Valve alongside ESL and BLAST, the Riyadh EWC Dota bracket in July, the ESL One and DreamLeague Majors, and the flagship event, The International 2026 in Shanghai from 13 to 23 August. Markets typically include match winner, map handicap, total kills over and under, First Blood, Roshan pickup, Tower cascade, Match Duration and, on Thunderpick and GG.BET, Radiant or Dire side winner. Item and skin betting is a separate market layer, covered further down.

Draft-first betting math. The edge nobody else is teaching

Pro Dota Bo3 series is a compound draft problem. Each map draft runs 5 bans, 5 picks, 5 bans, 5 picks, plus final flex. That is 20 decisions per game, 60 per Bo3 series. Every one of those decisions is a signal a book has not fully priced.

Three specific draft edges I chase.

First pick advantage into flex heroes. First pick means the team can lock in the strongest patch hero unopposed. In patch 7.38 and its point revisions, that hero has been Puck, Kez, and Doom in rotation. First-pick teams that grab any of those three win about 58 per cent of subsequent maps in the current patch. Match handicap markets don’t account for who has first pick draft. If a team wins the coin toss for first pick, the +1.5 map handicap on them is often mispriced.

Position 5 economy shape. The support role that starts in the offlane sacrifices last-hits to feed the mid. If the position 5 pick is a hero that scales without farm (Warlock, Winter Wyvern, Vengeful Spirit), the team’s late-game shape is stronger than the book realises. If the position 5 is a hero that needs items to matter (Rubick, Silencer, Skywrath), the team’s early-game ceiling is capped. Total kills markets swing with this. A no-scaling support means unders. A scaling support means overs. Books tend to average this across the season.

Counter-picks in phase three. The last two picks of the draft close the loop. When a team goes into the final two picks needing a counter to an already-drafted core, and they take a hero that doesn’t actually counter it (Necrophos into a Sniper draft is a common mistake because Necrophos’s ult doesn’t hit early enough), the book has not seen the misread yet. Live betting inside laning phase catches this.

The read is not automatic. Drafts that look decided on paper still fall apart in the laning phase, and a book that has not moved its line is not always wrong. Treat it as a positive-expected-value angle across a season rather than a lock on any single map, and stake it accordingly.

Books that don’t offer draft-specific markets (Betway is the biggest one that doesn’t) still let you translate the draft read into total-kills unders or over the alternate handicap. That’s how I use Betway. GG.BET occasionally opens First Pick and Last Pick outrights on the biggest events. That’s when I hit them the hardest.

Roshan and map economy. The other read books rarely price

Aegis of the Immortal is the single most valuable objective a Dota 2 team can hold. Roshan grants a bonus life on death that fundamentally changes teamfight math. Opening Roshan at minute 12 is a very different game state to opening Roshan at minute 22.

Pro teams treat Roshan control like NBA teams treat rebound control. It’s a compounding read. The team with Roshan gets safer around teamfights, which lets them push tiers of towers, which feeds the gold cascade, which lets them itemise, which lets them contest the next Roshan. If a team gets first Roshan early and holds map control, they win about 70 per cent of the subsequent tower cascades in this season’s data across ESL and BLAST tournaments I have logged.

Only GG.BET and Thunderpick consistently offer First Roshan markets on regular Bo3 series. Betway carries it on TI and the ESL Ones only. TonyBet does not carry it. If the market is available and the price is above 2.10 on the team that already has Aegis advantage on lane setup, you take it.

Match duration is the sibling market to Roshan control. When a team’s draft wants a 40-minute pace game and they force a Roshan fight at 15 minutes, they are betting on themselves to stall. If they lose that Roshan fight, the game shortens. Under 40 minutes on GG.BET and Thunderpick during ESL One Bangkok in May cleared four times out of five for me because Team Spirit’s early Roshan losses forced Talon to close before Talon’s late scaling was needed.

Tower gold timing is the last piece. First tower at minute 10 versus minute 14 changes 800 to 1200 gold across the map. Books don’t price tower gold cascades. First Tower props on GG.BET are the closest proxy. Read the draft’s early-game shape, back the aggressive team’s First Tower prop, close.

Item and skin betting. The Dota corner nobody else on this SERP covers

Dota 2 has a cosmetic economy that Valve has run since 2013. Immortal items, arcanas and treasures trade on the Steam Marketplace. Some of them cost several thousand dollars each. That economy has always overlapped with betting sites where you can wager cosmetic items instead of cash, and it is still legal in most jurisdictions where competitive esports betting is legal.

The two pillars of the item-betting market are match wagering with items as chips (you post an Immortal, so does the opposition, winner takes the pot) and skin-price prop betting on cosmetic drops during TI. Neither shows up on GG.BET, Betway, TonyBet or Thunderpick, so this section is informational rather than an operator recommendation.

What you should know as a Dota 2 punter approaching this market. The two legitimate item-betting sites operate under Curaçao and Anjouan licences and price cosmetic values based on Steam Marketplace floor plus a small vig. They accept skin deposits via Steam trade bots. Both have been operating for over three years and neither has had major payout complaints in the r/DotA2 archive.

What we don’t recommend. Anonymous coinflip roulette sites that price your Immortals at half of Steam floor. Any operator that asks for your Steam login credentials directly. Item betting operators that don’t have KYC on withdrawals above modest thresholds. All of these are red flags and we won’t name them.

For sharp Dota punters, the skin-price prop bets on TI 2026 arcana releases can be interesting. Valve typically releases new arcanas or persona sets in a Battle Pass timed to TI. Those items trade on Steam Marketplace from day one and the trajectory of pricing over the first 72 hours is quantifiable. If a book carries a prop on the release-day Steam floor of a new TI 2026 cosmetic, that is a genuinely different bet from a match bet and worth reading up on. As of writing, no mainstream sportsbook we track carries this. If any of the four operators above launches TI 2026 skin props before August, we’ll flag it here.

The International 2026 in Shanghai. The whole calendar hinges on this

The International 2026, 13 to 23 August 2026, Oriental Sports Center, Shanghai. 16 teams. Base prize pool $1.6 million. Battle Pass sales push the pool higher on a Valve curve that historically added 8 to 15 million on top of the base at TI. Group stage 13 to 16 August, main event playoffs 20 to 23 August. This is the season’s flagship and every operator opens their outright futures on it by early July.

Riyadh EWC Dota 2 bracket, mid-July 2026. Part of the Esports World Cup 2026 in Saudi Arabia. Runs across two weeks with a $2 million prize pool. Some of the teams competing at EWC play TI qualifiers a week later, which creates fatigue and roster-fitness reads worth tracking. Betway and TonyBet both carry the outright.

ESL One and DreamLeague Majors, spring and autumn. ESL One Bangkok wrapped in early May. DreamLeague Season 26 was played through May and June. ESL One Rio comes in October, after TI. These events feed regional qualifier points and give Cian’s team the read on which regions are peaking approaching TI.

Regional qualifiers for TI 2026, late July to early August. Six regions run parallel qualifiers. Chinese qualifier is the hardest, followed by South East Asia, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, North America and South America. Books usually price TI qualifier outrights only on the top two regions.

Games of the Future 2026 Astana, autumn. A one-million-dollar Dota 2 event scheduled after TI. Smaller field but a meaningful post-TI window if you enjoy betting on new roster shuffles after the September silly season.

TI 2026 outright futures opened at GG.BET, Thunderpick and Betway from early June. Team Spirit, Team Falcons, Talon and Team Liquid are the four public favourites. As of 01 July, Team Spirit is 3.75 outright at GG.BET, Falcons 4.20, Talon 6.00, Liquid 7.50. Our read is that Talon is the mispriced side because their Asian regional form has been sharper than the public thinks and Shanghai favours the SEA travel routes.

Markets by phase of the map

Every Dota 2 map runs through the same rough phases. Different markets correlate with different phases. Read them in the order they resolve.

Draft phase (0-8 minutes before the horn)

First Pick, Last Pick, Ban-phase counter-signals. Available on GG.BET during majors and on Thunderpick occasionally. This is where the draft-first thesis pays. Most of the value lives on Bo3 series where a team wins the coin flip for first pick and the market hasn’t updated.

Laning phase (0-12 minutes)

First Blood duo, Tower cascade, Roshan pickup. Available on GG.BET and Thunderpick. Read the safe-lane match-up in game one. If a carry with a hard counter in lane is set up for zero last-hits by minute 4, the First Blood and First Tower props usually swing to their opposition.

Mid-game (12-30 minutes)

Total Kills over and under, Match Duration over and under, Radiant/Dire side winner. Available on all four books. This is where the Roshan read compounds into the market. A team that took first Roshan early wants to close before the 30-minute mark. Under 40 minutes is often the right side.

Late game (30-50 minutes)

Live match winner odds. Available on GG.BET, Thunderpick and Betway on Majors. If a team has clearly stalled to their late-scaling win condition (Medusa online at 30 minutes, Terrorblade with an Aegis, Void Spirit with Refresher), the live line will trail their actual win probability. Take it.

Series outcome

Match winner (series), Map handicap, Correct score, Correct game count. Available on all four books. Value lives on 2-0 finishes when the game-one draft carries into game two.

Regional style. Six flavours of pro Dota

Six competitive regions, six draft philosophies. Books tend to price teams generically without weighting regional style. That leaves value on the table.

China plays a slow, itemised, teamfight-focused Dota. The Chinese carries scale late and the supports rotate less. Chinese teams win about 65 per cent of their maps that go over 45 minutes and lose about 55 per cent of the maps that end under 30. Match Duration overs on Chinese domestic finals are the ambient value bet. At TI 2026 in Shanghai the home crowd could add another edge to Chinese teams’ late-game confidence.

South East Asia plays the highest tempo Dota in the world. Talon, BOOM and TnC drop fights before minute five and stack their entire draft around aggression. SEA maps average four minutes shorter than Chinese maps. Total kills overs and Match Duration unders sit right for most SEA-versus-SEA matches. When SEA plays Europe, books tend to over-favour Europe’s macro. Live betting the SEA aggressive early game inside the first fifteen minutes is one of the highest-EV in-play shapes on the calendar.

Western Europe plays macro-driven, position-perfect Dota that punishes small mistakes. Team Liquid, Tundra and Nigma run drafts optimised for the mid-game timing window at 25 to 35 minutes. Books tend to price WEU teams as favourites correctly on outrights and get the map handicap slightly wrong on their favour. Take the WEU under against SEA opposition.

Eastern Europe plays draft-heavy, high-variance Dota. Team Spirit’s back-to-back TI wins in 2021 and 2023 were built on unusual heroes and creative draft comps. EEU is the region most likely to run a legitimate patch-breaking strategy. Live-betting the second and third games of an EEU Bo3 series is a good angle when their game-one draft looked odd. Sometimes odd is genius.

North America is smaller now than it used to be. Shopify Rebellion and NewsomeDota (formerly Nouns) are the two current NA sides. NA typically qualifies one team for TI. The regional field is thin, which means the top NA team gets easy qualifier runs but harder international brackets. Books tend to overprice NA qualifier winners on the international stage. Fade them.

South America is a niche but sharp region. Beastcoast and Infamous run experimental heroes and often produce meaningful upsets in the group stage of Majors. Books tend to under-price SAM upsets by 15 to 20 per cent. The +300 to +500 on a SAM team in a group-stage best-of-two is a solid EV shape.

A quiet note for Canadian readers

Canada is a meaningful audience for Dota 2 betting and worth a specific mention. Ontario residents under the iGaming Ontario AGCO framework have a regulated home in TonyBet, which holds both an Ontario AGCO licence for Ontario residents and an Estonian sportsbook licence for the rest of Canada. That’s why TonyBet is in card three of the four-up at the top of this page. Their Dota 2 market depth is thinner than GG.BET’s on regular Bo3 series, but they carry the TI outright and the Riyadh EWC bracket, which is the coverage that matters for a Canadian bettor building a TI position. Dota 2 terminology you’ll see in markets

Draft. The pick-and-ban phase before each map. 20 decisions per game across bans, picks and final flex.

Position 1 to 5. The five hero roles from hard carry (1) through mid, offlaner, soft support and hard support (5). Draft shape depends on position balance.

Roshan. The neutral boss that drops Aegis of the Immortal. First Roshan timing is a huge map-economy swing.

Aegis. Aegis of the Immortal. Grants a bonus life to whoever holds it. Roshan drops one each kill.

First Blood. First kill of the map. A distinct prop market with its own odds.

Radiant / Dire. The two sides of the map. Radiant is the green side, Dire the red. Radiant has historically been slightly favoured, but the current patch has evened this out.

Rax. Racks or barracks. Structures inside each base that produce lane creeps. Losing a rax makes the corresponding lane’s opposing creeps stronger. Endgame market.

TI. The International. Valve’s flagship annual event. TI 2026 is TI 15. The season’s largest prize pool by a wide margin.

Bo3 / Bo5. Best of three or five games. Group-stage matches are typically Bo2 or Bo3. Playoffs and Grand Finals are Bo3 or Bo5.

DPC / Post-DPC circuit. Dota Pro Circuit is the historical franchise system Valve retired after 2023. The current post-DPC calendar is run by ESL and BLAST with Valve endorsement, feeding TI qualification.

EWC. The Esports World Cup in Riyadh. The 2026 Dota bracket is a $2 million event in July.

Immortal. A tier of cosmetic item. Immortals trade on Steam Marketplace and underpin the item-betting economy separate from cash betting.
