We opened a Betway account and never got a penny into it
That’s not a moan. It turned out to be the most useful thing we found all day.
Betway is the most heavily licensed book we cover, and you feel that in both directions. The regulators are real. The app is the best in our set. The spending controls are the strongest we have tested anywhere. The flip side is a bookmaker that plays everything safe, and a verification process that stopped us dead before we could deposit.
Betway at a glance
- Betway lets you set daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits during sign-up, before you put any money in. We set ours to €25, about C$40, and they worked.
- Betway is licensed in Ontario by the AGCO. It is not yet licensed in Alberta.
- Betway priced 63 separate markets on one LEC best-of-three, and that was only two of its seven market tabs.

How we tested Betway
We opened a real Betway account on 21 August 2026, on a phone, so we saw exactly what you would see. We set deposit limits during registration and checked afterwards that they had actually taken. We counted every market on a Fnatic against Shifters LEC best-of-three the day before it played, and converted the odds by hand to work out what Betway’s cut is.
We did not deposit. Verification stopped us, and that is the next section.

The bit nobody writes about
Sign-up took six minutes. Four steps, no messing.
Then a yellow bar appeared at the top of the screen and stayed there all day. “Before you can deposit and play, please verify your account.”
Betway is clear about what it wants. A driving licence covers both jobs at once, who you are and where you live. Any other ID and you need two more documents to prove the address.
Our ID had an old address on it. We sent other documents. None of them worked, and the balance stayed at €0.00.
To be fair to Betway, that is a licensed book doing its job. A gap between your ID and your address is exactly what they are meant to catch. But if your paperwork is messy, you will be fixing it before you can bet, not after.
Bring a current driving licence. It will save you the afternoon we lost.

They let us cap our own spending before taking a penny
Step four of the sign-up form has three dropdowns sitting under the address box. Daily limit. Weekly limit. Monthly limit.
We set all three to €25 before the account even existed.
They stuck. Later that afternoon the Responsible Gambling page showed all three live, each with a bar underneath reading Used €0.00, Remaining €25.00. Session reminders and self-exclusion sit in the same place, alongside the usual limits, timeouts and self-exclusion tools every book should offer.
Read that again, because it is easy to skim past.
Betway asked us how much we wanted to be able to lose before it would take any money off us. Not buried in account settings three weeks later. On the sign-up form, in front of the deposit button, as part of opening the account.
We have tested a lot of bookmakers and this is the first time we have seen it done that way round. Most of them will give you the tools, but you have to go looking, and you go looking after the money is already in.
If you have ever worried about your own betting, that one design choice is worth more than any welcome offer.
Small thing we also liked: the marketing consent box was not pre-ticked.

The licence stack, and what it buys you
Betway runs on a Malta Gaming Authority licence (MGA/CRP/130/2006) held since August 2018, a German GGL clearance, an Ontario AGCO licence for Canadian players in Ontario, and a UK Gambling Commission licence (39225) on top. The operating company is Betway Limited, registered in Malta as C39710. Every one of those numbers sits in the footer of the site, and you can check them on the MGA public register or the AGCO registrant list in about a minute.
Why care about a licence at all? A regulated book ringfences player funds, runs independent dispute resolution, and cannot quietly sit on your balance the way an offshore operator sometimes can. That protection is the whole reason to pick a book like this over a flashier crypto one. It is also the reason the bonuses are smaller. You are trading headline value for the boring stuff that actually protects your money.
The German esports catch nobody explains
Betway holds a German GGL licence, and that is exactly the problem for esports. Germany regulates betting under the 2021 State Treaty on Gambling (the GlüStV), and its permitted-bet list does not include esports. So Betway.de, the site German visitors are sent to, carries no esports markets at all. Older write-ups (including an earlier version of this one) claimed German players get esports through Betway’s Malta product. We checked again in August 2026 and that is not the case: a German account gets the German product, and the German product has no esports.
If you bet from Germany, Betway is a good football book and nothing more for esports. We couldn’t bet, but we could count
You do not need money in the account to count markets. So we counted.

The Popular Markets tab alone held 37 markets. Match winner, correct score, two handicap lines, total maps, both teams to win at least one map, twelve kills handicap lines, and eighteen total kills lines running from 58.5 up to 75.5.
Map 1 Player Specials held another 26. Every player priced by name. Sheo, Nuc, Paduck, Razork, Rooster, Soboro, Upset, Vladi, Lospa, Stend.
That is 63 markets from two tabs out of seven.
Map 3 gets priced properly too, with its own player props, which is not a given on a best of three. Plenty of books stop at Map 2 and leave you with nothing if the series goes the distance.
What you will not find here is the exotic stuff. No first dragon, no first baron, no kill maker, no map duration in minutes. Betway goes deep on fewer market types rather than wide across a lot of them. If you want to bet on which dragon spawns first, this is not your book. If you want eighteen different total-kills lines to pick from, it very much is. Coverage runs across CS2, League of Legends, Dota 2, Valorant, Overwatch and Rocket League.

Then we did the maths
Every price has the bookie’s cut baked into it. Turn both sides of a market into percentages, add them up, and anything over 100 is theirs. Lower is better for you. If that is new to you, we have broken down how esports odds are priced in full elsewhere.
Betway’s cut on LoL match winner came out at 7.46% across five LEC and LCK games.
Then we ran the same sums on the player props, which is where most books quietly take more off you. Kills, totals, the fun bets.
7.96%.
Half a point. That is the finding.
Bookmakers usually price their headline markets sharp and their novelty markets fat, because that is where the casual money goes and nobody checks. At Betway that gap is a fraction of what we expected.
In plain terms: betting a player’s kill line at Betway costs you about the same as betting the match winner. You are not paying a premium for the interesting bet. That is rare, and if you are the sort who builds a card out of player props rather than picking winners, it is the single best reason on this page to use them.
The numbers are all above. Do the sums yourself if you like, that is the point of showing them.

What we can’t tell you
We never deposited. So we cannot tell you from experience how Betway pays out.
For the record, Betway publishes withdrawals at one to three business days, takes Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and bank transfer, and applies a €4,000 weekly withdrawal cap. There is no cryptocurrency at all, which is a genuine miss given how much of the esports crowd now expects it. Those are Betway’s own published figures and we have not verified any of them ourselves.
What we will not do is repeat payout timings from other sites as though we had timed them. “How long does a Betway withdrawal take” is one of the most searched questions about this book, and our honest answer is that we do not know, because we never got that far. Betway’s public Trustpilot and AskGamblers pages do carry a steady run of withdrawal complaints, usually payouts sitting in pending past the quoted window and tied to verification checks. Given what happened to us at sign-up, that pattern is worth taking seriously.
Same for support. We never opened a chat. We will come back and fill both in.
The bonus, briefly
Betway usually runs a few welcome offers at once and lets you pick one when you sign up. When we opened our account there were three on the table, plus an option to take none at all. It’s a football book that also does esports
Log in and you get Premier League free bet builders, Thierry Henry selling an accumulator, and a row of horse racing trebles.
Scroll the sports list and you pass football, horse racing, Formula 1, rugby union and darts before esports shows up. The bottom bar has a Casino button and no esports button. Tap Casino and the app changes shape completely. Roulette, blackjack, slots, a prize wheel dangling €200 if you stake a tenner.
None of that makes the esports worse. Betway had LEC, LCK, LPL, VCT Pacific, The International, CBLOL, LFL and the Esports World Cup all priced on the same afternoon, with streams on the League games and eight esports events running in play at once.
Just know you are a guest in a football bookmaker, not the main event.
Betting from Germany or Canada
Germany. The main Betway link routes German visitors to Betway.de, the GGL-licensed site, and Betway.de has no esports markets. Do not sign up there expecting to bet on CS2 or LoL. Start with the legal guide, then see where German esports bettors actually bet.
Canada. Betway is fully licensed in Ontario. Registered with the AGCO since April 2022, running under an agreement with iGaming Ontario, and betway.ca is the site you will land on.
Everywhere else in Canada, it is not. Alberta is the one to watch. Betway has finished registering with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis but still needs an agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation before it can legally operate there. That has not happened yet. In the rest of the country you are in the grey market: you can get an account, but no provincial regulator is standing behind it. One thing to flag, because it is the sort of detail people skip. We tested Betway’s international site, not betway.ca. On the Canadian site the odds show as decimal instead of fractional, it is dollars, the welcome offer is different and Interac is on the cashier. The pricing, the market depth and the limit tools we measured are the same product underneath. The paperwork wrapped around it is not.

So should you sign up?
Sign up if you bet player props. Betway charges you almost nothing extra for them, and that saving lands every single time you place one.
Sign up if you want limits you can switch on yourself. You cap your daily spend before you deposit anything, and you would struggle to find that anywhere else.
Sign up if you back best-of-threes, because Map 3 gets priced here with props on it, and plenty of books do not bother.
Do not bother yet if your ID and your current address do not match. Fix that first, or you will waste an afternoon like we did. Skip it entirely if you bet in crypto, because there is none here at all.

Betway publishes one to three business days. We cannot confirm it, because our account never cleared identity verification, so we never deposited or withdrew. Betway’s Trustpilot and AskGamblers pages carry a run of complaints about payouts sitting in pending longer than that, usually tied to verification checks. Budget for a proper ID check on your first cashout.
Why couldn’t you deposit at Betway?
Our photo ID showed a previous address. Betway asks for a driving licence, which proves identity and address together, or another ID plus two documents proving your address. Ours did not match and the extra documents were not accepted, so the account stayed unverified and we never got money in.
How many esports markets does Betway have?
On one LEC best-of-three we counted 37 markets on the Popular Markets tab and 26 on the Map 1 Player Specials tab. That is 63 from two of the seven tabs available on that match, including individually named player kill lines, and Map 3 is priced with its own props.
Is Betway licensed in Germany for esports?
No. Betway holds a German GGL licence, but the GGL does not list esports as a permitted bet category under the 2021 State Treaty, so Betway.de carries no esports markets.
